Seems I'm all over the place these days...

LiveJournal
Twitter
FaceBook
MySpace
Blogspot
LinkedIn (for business use only. No linky here)

...and most of these have the exact same content. I've been using Ping.FM to post status updates, which then replicates to all but LJ and LinkedIn. However, I have LoudTwitter combining my tweets (which primarily come from Ping.FM) into one daily LJ post. I'm pondering killing that and letting Ping.FM handle that. UPDATE: Just did that.

My problem now is that I have different things to follow in different places. I am still interested in LJ, but also now FaceBook and Twitter. Most blogging will get shoved into my RSS reader of choice (Google Reader) I'd really like to have something like that for these other social networks, instead of Twhirl/Twitterberry for Twitter and using the actual web sites. Anyone have any ideas?

(BTW, if you want to try out Ping.FM, let me know. I have a code for that.)

I guess I need a version 3 icon.

(See [info]news for more info.)

There's always this one I suppose.

In case you weren't sure where LiveJournal went to for the last eight hours or so, the data center hosting their services was hit with a power outage, and SixApart is just now able to bring up service. This impacted Vox, LJ, and TypePad as far as I know, as well as craigslist, RedEnvelope, Yelp, GameSpot, Technorati, and NetFlix.

Version 2?
I feel like this icon, created when it was announced that LiveJournal was bought by SixApart, is getting to be more and more true. This place is becoming "corporate".

Good or Evil?
WordPress is looking interesting right now.

EDIT: For those that don't know, LiveJournal has deleted a whole bunch of accounts... well, read this. Back? good.

I hate when big systems get co-opted for one small groups need (see American political parties), and fear what else can/will happen. Mind you, I am not directly affected by these deletions, and don't think I have anything that people would find objectionable enough to result in a mass deletion. Having already paid for a permanent account, I can't express my opinion with money.

But that doesn't mean I have a say in other ways.

Oh, and I think LJ did something funky and logged everyone me out. If you haven't been seeing the normal number of postings, you may have been affected too.

I just looked at my bannination list, and am amazed how large it is.

[info]yummyham (was a random person I gave an invite to, who lived in Riverside, but ended up leaving LJ, so banninated to clean up the list)
[info]ihatebitchers (never knew this person, and decided to danninate out of principle)
...and the 15 troll accounts.

And yes, banninate is a fun made up word, and since someone else's rules won't let me use this word in their house, I'll use it all I want here. Because this is MY HOUSE! *thumps chest*

Using Microsoft's new BETA software Live Writer. Why? Because it's there. No real other reason, since I do like Semagic. Well, okay, I wanted to see how the WYSIWYG interface looked like. To me, dealing with pictures is one area Semagic doesn't do a good job with. Vox handles this well, and this seems to handle it well, but Semagic -- not so much. *shrug* Now... let's see... no tags. Boo hiss. No privacy settings. Boo hiss. This basically allows the minimalist approach to publish content regardless of platform, but doesn't cater to any platform specific things like tags, privacy settings, reply settings, etc. Hm. Now let's see if I can get this published...

EDIT: Yeah, it published. BTW, default icon used, which in my case is none. But the picture was automatically uploaded to my Scrapbook, which is cool. I was wondering how that'd work, since that image was on my local computer... tags, icon, and this note added via LJ web interface for editing.

EDIT #2: No Vox suport, yet.

28th-Jul-2006 08:22 am - New window?
Technical Difficulties (Sports Night)
So I was reading [info]suggestions, and there are a number of people in this post who complained about links that force open a new window, especially with the prevalance of tabbed browsers these days. I myself have been making a conscience effort of coding my links to open in new windows because, well, I like it. If you aren't sure what I'm talking about, it's the difference between these links to open Google --
No new window/tab
New window/tab

And this has me wondering....
Poll #780206 Do you like having a new window/tab coded for you on links?

Yes, there is a certain amount of irony posting something to my LiveJournal which gives the current subjects of my Livejournal entries. Why do you ask?
28th-Jun-2006 01:35 pm - More on Vox
Vox
Courtesy of [info]dorwrath, I now have a Standard account on Vox and have been poking around. A lot of that is becuase I hear the bru-ha-ha going on right now with comparing LJ and Vox, and wanted to see this for myself versus third hand. Of course, the result is something that others can then take as thrid hand... *snicker*

Vox is different. It's built upon a different paradigm that LiveJournal has. LiveJournal is all about communal blogging. Yes, you have your own journal, but there are threaded replies easily made from other LJ users, and codes that make is very easy to reference other community members. Vox is more like a traditional, stand-alone blogging service (think Blogger) with a little bit of community thrown in, and with a lot of the Web 2.0 sensabilities. LJ (optionally) sends you emails whenever you get a reply to a post. Vox, not so much. Whereas LiveJournal is still held to using HTML, Vox uses AJAX to make tasks simple for novices. On LiveJournal, people are concerned about doing cut tags for pictures, less someone be on dial up. Vox is all about a broadband connection, and there are no stinkin' cut tags!

The reason I like LiveJournal is, frankly, you guys. A blog that has no interaction is, frankly, boring to me. I would never keep it updated. But I am vested with LiveJournal and the community that is here. After all, it had been a long time since I kept up with people like [info]lambertman, [info]jiggery_pokery, and [info]jelly_doughnut. Now, these people are in my life again, and I've met many new friends. I just don't see that going away, and I don't see that happening on Vox in it's current state. Mind you, I also don't see what the big deal is about MySpace, so who am I to talk? =)

That being said, there are some Vox features that would be REALLY COOL to see implemented in LiveJournal. Seems like everything has a feed -- the neighborhood, posts by specifc tag, neighborhood by tags... you name it, and it seems to have a feed. And as much as I still do some things "old school" like using <b&;gt; HTML tags, some of the newer sensabilities of "click, modify, set" are fairly cool and intuative.

*shrug* Vox still has a ways to go until they are production ready. I mentioned in my last posting about the mobposting security issue, which is major. They don't have a way to effectively post apart from sending an email (unsecured) or visiting their web site. They don't integrate picutres outside their service, so you can't easily put LiveJournal's ScrapBook pictures in a Vox post, or hotlinked pictures from anywhere else on the net. Well, I take that back. You can, interestingly enough, put Flickr and Photobucket pictures in a Vox posting.

Our networkoperations staff is working around the clock with our Internet accessproviders to resolve the issue. We appreciate your patience andsupport, and will provide updates as we have them.

I know that sometimes, people make a post along the lines of "If you want to delete me as a friend, you can do so today." I just want to make a point that, if you'd like to remove me as a friend, you can just do it. No harm, no foul. Don't wait for a special day, because every day is a special day. Or some crap like that.

Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice.... This journal will never have ads in it, though my friends list may because a couple of feeds have them embedded. Got to love permanent accounts...
