In order to set Consolas as the default font, you need to first add the following font-specific entry to your Windows registry.

Go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Console\TrueTypeFont, add a string value (REG_SZ) with the name 00 and put Consolas in the data field. *If you already have two fonts set in the DOS windows, set the name of Consolas as 000 (three 0’s). Now reboot your Windows computer, open the command prompt window and set the default font to Consolas.

This list is more for me than you, because I want to make sure I have this list somewhere. I thought it might be an interesting look at what I have installed though. This doesn't include standard software for my company, like the antivirus software, which are on my machine automagically upon reimage. NOTE: Some of the links are to web pages though I have the install with is licensed. Items with a * mean I have a local install source.

THE VERY MODEL OF A MODERN NETWORK TV SHOW

CAST
We'll be the very model of a modern network TV show
Each time that we walk into this august and famous studio
We're starting out from scratch after a run of twenty years and so
We hope that you don't mind that our producer was caught doing blow

CHORUS
They hope that you don't mind that their producer was caught doing blow
They hope that you don't mind that their producer was caught doing blow
They hope that you don't mind that their producer was caught doing mounds of blow

CAST
Yes, it's hard to be a player when at heart you've always had a hunch
To bite the hand that feeds you is a scary way of doing lunch
But still when we walk into this august and famous studio
We'll be the very model of a modern network TV show

CHORUS
But still when they walk into this august and famous studio
They'll be the very model of a modern network TV show

They'll hap'ly do the favor of an intellectual reach-around
They'll hap'ly do the favor of hundred-dollar hooker's reach-around
They'll hap'ly do the favor of a verbal euphemistic reach-around

And then the corporations will not hesitate to pull their dough

Something that I've been hanging onto for a long time, and since I'm purging physical files, I thought I'd share. It's dated December 2005, mentions information about SMSv4 and not System Center Configuration Manager 2007, but there's still good info in it. The concept of a reverse collection is interesting, especially if you want to have a reverse collection of machines that don't have the approved antivirus, for example.

Generic Microsoft Support Lifecycle Policy: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifecycle
Windows Lifecycle Policy: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx

Windows 2000 - Entered into Extended Support on June 30, 2005. This means Microsoft will only provide security updates for free to the platform. There are no additional features or enhancements offered for free on the platform, and new software from Microsoft is no longer installable on the platform. End of support is currently scheduled for June 2010.
Additional source: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/evaluation/news/bulletins/extendedsupport.mspx

Windows XP - Currently in Mainstream Support, which means that Microsoft provides security updates as well as additional features and enhancements. New software from Microsoft is still installable on the platform. Microsoft policy is to provide a minimum of 5 years mainstream support from initial release date, which was 12/31/2001, as well as 5 years of Extended Support at the supported service pack level. XP SP3 is currently expected in the first half of 2008. There is a real possibility that SP3 will be the final service pack, and the product will then enter Extended Support. This will move end of support to 2013.

Vista - Currently in Mainstream Support, since if was just released. A minimum of 5 years mainstream support would put this entering Extended support no earlier than January 2012, and end of support no earlier than 2017. Realistically, these dates will extended beyond the minimum due to service packs and other issues.

Obstensibly called "Microsoft Exchange Server Error Code Look-up", this is a cool little tool for looking up those irritating Microsoft errors like -2147217406. It's not perfect, but it should at least guide you down the path of what the error may be, based on what you were doing.

(Also works with WSUS error codes.)

Have you gone into ADSIEDIT.MSC and found the value of an object's pwdLastSet attribute? You'll get something that looks like 127889763885744389 which, frankly, means nothing. How can you convert this number into some date and time that means something?

Well, if you have Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, there is a really simple way of doing this because it's part of the operating system! It's called W32tm

Technical Difficulties (Sports Night)
So I was reading [info]suggestions, and there are a number of people in this post who complained about links that force open a new window, especially with the prevalance of tabbed browsers these days. I myself have been making a conscience effort of coding my links to open in new windows because, well, I like it. If you aren't sure what I'm talking about, it's the difference between these links to open Google --
No new window/tab
New window/tab

And this has me wondering....

Because of @$#%#$ Verizon, I need to get my wife her own domain stat. I need to be able to register the domain for multiple years, and someone needs to host it with a decent email service. Because this is for her, a decent mailbox size is good, with one mailbox needed. Spam filtering is a plus. I will be forwarding one email address from my domain to the new domain for a while, and she'll be replying as if she's on my domain for a while, so it needs to support that. (Therein why Verizon is on my list right now...)

Having a web site is a plus at this point. Oh, and because I'm cheap, I want this cheap. I will prepay for a lengthy service term for a discount.

Suggestions? If I need to separate out services (domain registration, web hosting, email), fine, but this needs to be done today.

Oh and dreamhost.com won't register the domain, saying it's taken though it isn't. So scratch them off the list for that.

Hitchhiker Don't Panic
One hundred years ago today, a major earthquake hit San Francisco. There is a whole lot of press going on about it, including a ceremony in the city this morning, and a recap on "American Experience" (yes, I watch PBS too).

Here's the important thing to take way from day's anniversary -- have an emergency plan ready, and review it from time to time. In a major disaster, it might be several days before vital services are restored, as we saw with Hurricane Katrina. Don't have a plan yet? Start at http://72hours.org/. It's designed for San Francisco, but let's face it, it's a start! There is also http://www.ready.gov/america/index.html, which I don't think is as comprehensive.

And, most importantly, don't panic. (obHGTTG)
</soapbox>

EDIT: I'm trying to use the event of 100 years ago to encourage you to plan in the event of *any* emergency. I'm not trying to advocate that people who live in areas where earthquakes happen are the only ones that need to prepare. Just ask people in NYC on the afternoon of 9/11/2001, or those that were impacted by Katrina, or those impacted with the Oklahoma bombings, or ... Regardless of *where* you live (yes, even you [info]jiggery_pokery), you should have a contingency plan in place and review it for relevancy. That's all I'm saying.
7th-Apr-2006 01:09 pm - Esoteric error
WSUS
When using WSUS or Windows Update, trying to install XP SP2, you'll get error 0x8007f0f4.

Chances are this is a laptop or tablet machine. Believe it or not, this error means you are not on AC Power. On tablets, even when plugged into AC, sometimes the computer will think it's running in battery mode and not install the update. You can validate this by going to the Control Panel, Power Options, and the tab Power Meter.

Solution: Plug into AC Power. If you already were, shut down, remove the batteries, plug into AC Power, and try again.

Told you it was esoteric...
