Ice Ice Baby

We bought a refrigerator from Sears a few years back, and also paid for the five year extended service warranty. Typically, I don't do that unless I think it's going to be useful. Laptops warranties that allow for full price replacements come to mind there, but that's another episode.

Anyway, I noticed the other day that we hardly had any ice in the container, which was odd. I kept an ear open for the sound of ice falling, but none such noise was forthcoming. A quick call to Sears service department gave me a tip. Occasionally, the hose where water get put into the tray occasionally will get a little drop of water that doesn't quite make it to the tray. Since this *is* in a freezer, that drop of water will freeze into ice. When the next amount of water comes down to fill up the tray, water collects on the piece of ice, which then gets frozen... Well, before you know it, the hose is filled with ice and no water can get through.

I was able to clear out a chunk of ice where the ice actually dumps out, but the rest of the hose is inside the freeze itself. I could get in there, but I have a warranty, dangit! So another call to Sears on Thursday netted me an appointment today. He came out, looked at the fridge, and instantly said "I need to order a part." Aparantly, this model I have has a known defect, where there is no heater to keep that hose clear. So he's ordered a heater kit, which will take two weeks to come in. Grr.

Anyone have an ice tray I can borrow? =)

The same thing has happened with my parents' fridge from Sears about 18 months ago, a fridge they purchased while I was out in CA in '01.

We have even more in common--the same model fridge with the same defective water hose!

As a matter of fact, I have three I don't use. I'd be happy to send 'em out to you if you want them.
