I would avoid any iTunes updates today or tomorrow. A lot of people are reporting timeouts resulting in bricked iPhones and iPods.

Hmmm. And to think my daughter and I are going to the Apple store this evening to get new iPod cases.

As for iTunes: I can't see it bricking an iPod, even with the problems. At worst, you don't update the iTunes software (after all, the full package has to download before you can install it on your PC). If they are issuing new iPod software (I don't know if they are)... again, that has to download to your system before it can be installed on the iPod. So if the iTunes server is having trouble, the download just won't complete. Of course, don't install this software the first day anyway -- wait for bug report (and don't install XP SP3 on your HP AMD machine, but that's a different issue).
