Walking in LA

It's hard for me to write this without sounding like cold-hearted bastard, so please forgive me it comes off that way. It's not meant to.

We have street people in LA, and I pass them by every day. Most of the time, the request for money is allegedly for food, room or transportation. After a while, you hear the same request, usually from the same people. Every once in a while, you'll hear something new. One guys walked up to me and asked if I had a million dollars to spare. Interesting the first time, but not so much a week later when he did the same thing. I once saw a person I'd seen before travelling on the Red Line, which was odd. As soon as we hit Union Station, he bolted out of the train, RAN upstairs, and stood there with his hand out, looking desparate. It's hard not to imagine what that man would do if he put as much energy into a job. There was another man in a wheelchair who used to sit by the escalators to the Red Line and demand money. Literally, in a rough voice, he'd say "Give me a dollar!" Scared quite a few people to the point of literally jumping.

Today, though, was different. Today, I heard one that I will not soon forget.

There was an older lady, who had some teeth missing standing at the corner across from the Red Line. She had her hand out, saying "Can you please give me money? I'm on my period."

No, I'm not kidding. Those were her exact words. I didn't want to stay around to find out if it was true...

That it was, and not one that is likely to be topped for some time...

OMG that's a riot!
If it were me I would have pulled out
a spare tampon from my purse and given
it to her. THAT is when you know if she
is serious or not... of course if she wasn't
serious she would then deck me... haha

That may have freaked her out ... if *I* did that.

Didja give her any money? She's obviously in the red. *ducks oncoming flying tomatoes*

When you ride on the subway every day, you start to see familiar faces looking for a handout (or singing "Under the Boardwalk" off key). That's a new one, however.

Love the icon.

Yeah, I ganked that one and this one from dimestorewhore with permission, though I think they may have come from a SN community.

If he'd just clean up a bit, I suspect someone would be willing to hire him for a sales job of some sort. I mean, he does have "sales" experience...
